Whammy is where new New Zealand music gets made, in the basement of St Kevins Arcade at the top of K Road. Indie, punk, rock and whatever else comes through, with a calendar that runs months deep and international acts turning up in a room far smaller than they could fill. The adjoining Double Whammy takes four to five hundred for bigger shows, and the Wine Cellar next door does the quieter end, singer-songwriters and album releases. Everything is ticketed and shows sell out. It is loud, it gets hot, and the drinks come in plastic. None of that is a complaint. Roughly twenty-five minutes uphill from the Viaduct, so take the bus or a ride.
